We’re doing fine here in Panama!
Just like many of you, we’re officially on homestay.
Panama is following very similar protocols to the US
and other countries: social distancing with no
gatherings (church, etc.), schools closed, work at
home, very light traffic, only essential services
and businesses open, international travel suspended.
Also, Panama implemented a 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM curfew
last week. Today, the new curfew hours are extended,
from 5:00 PM to 5:00 AM. The government announced it
would be implementing a schedule to leave home for
one hour each day based upon the last number of
the person’s national ID card.
COVID-19 has literally turned our
world upside down! It kind of feels like someone hit
the pause button on life. What’s more, life’s normal
is being redefined almost daily. On my desk sits a
small decorative block of wood with a plaque that
reads God Never Panics. It constantly reminds me
that He is in control and encourages me to yield
every care and concern to Him. The Lord has also
brought to mind Scriptures that console and carry
us.
“And this is the plan: At the
right time he will bring everything together under
the authority of Christ—everything in heaven and on
earth.” Ephesian 1:10, NLT
“We can make our plans, but the
Lord determines our steps.” Proverbs 16:9, NLT
For the believer, life is all
about finding balance between making our plans and
trusting God's plan. In our heart, we know that His plans
trump our own. He knows us better than we know
ourselves and He
loves us more than anyone else does. Even so, we are
frustrated when things don’t go as planned. And now,
when life itself is interrupted, we must learn to
turn from fear and despondency to faith and dependence on the God who
has everything under control. Let’s allow the Lord
go deep into our soul and use these hard times to
strengthen our faith, refine our character and
reshape our ministry.
We’re not able to share too many
ministry reports. All planned activities and events
have been cancelled or postponed. However, we can share some
of our favorite photos of some of the people we serve, who
have touched our lives. We can say thank you for
your faithful prayer and financial support. And we
can share this prayer with you.
Father, we thank you for your
protection from the COVID-19 virus. We ask you to
continue to protect us, our family and friends.
Protect the children and youth who are at home
instead of in class in one of our Good Shepherd
Schools in Panama. Protect our teachers and leaders,
our pastors and congregations. Help us to trust in
your big plan that ultimately brings everything
together under the authority of Christ. Help us to
not be paralyzed by fear or a lack of understanding,
but instead to trust you and to recognize that you
use crisis to open our hearts to new things. Help us
to see these new opportunities and to stand ready to
minister as you lead. You are our Rock and our
Fortress. We rest in your love.
